“Welcome to the World” – Sophie Miller

The camera’s shaky,
zoomed in too close
to my face,
only one arm and my head
visible above the blankets.

My dad’s voice strains
against the overlay of the music,
his whispers full of pride.
I’m asleep on my side,
raw pink skin
and hands curled together;
a small dusting of hair
on the head that my father chuckles
is a little out of shape
after I got a bit squashed
along the way.

When he picks me up
my arms reach out blindly,
eyes tight shut,
but touch is enough.
Quickly nestled in his arms,
I blink slowly, a struggle,
then fall asleep once more.

My grandfather’s voice
from behind the camera
murmurs softly:

Welcome to the world.
